Zane, as I expected, your interview of the wonderful Coral Darby was excellent. Your comment on knowing what a good leader is was inspiring. I think your awareness of yourself is refreshing and agree that it is important to recognize what you don’t know, and that is one aspect that can make a good leader. Knowing where you do not excel and ask for assistance from someone who may know more. I think to be a great leader you have to show some modesty.

Coral, your statement about associating yourself with people who are brighter than you is something I understand and agree with. Not that YOU need to associate yourself with brighter people because I can tell you are awfully bright and I would be honored to associate myself with you! But the saying I have heard so many times through my life, “surround yourself with people who inspire you (or motivate you, or have the same goals as you, etc.” I personally like to surround myself with people who inspire me, as it brings out the creativity and happiness in me. Like you, I like to always be learning and try to surround myself with people who are like minded, goal oriented and are not afraid to try something new.

Coral, I love hearing that your confidence has grown since joining this program, especially in your business – that’s what this is all about, right? I too feel the same way because I truly had very little knowledge of many business operations in general and I have no become that sort of person who talks about it constantly. My husband works in Auto Sales and is constantly running numbers and has this whole other knowledge of numbers I cannot fathom. But I feel since this class specifically I can try and chat with him more confidently about such things. I also want to purchase a new van by the end of the year, so I am trying to see what it takes to buy one through the business (if that’s even possible). Well I went off on a tangent.

The more I listen to you talk Coral, the more I can relate, from making the decision of going to grad school for you, to taking on too much at one time and being able to recognize your growth and knowing when to bring on a partner. I do not wish to bring on a partner in my bakery, but finding a way to get someone to help me on Fridays while I bake all day and night and might sleep a couple hours before hitting the pavement at the farmers market first thing Saturday morning. I had to make a tough but necessary decision at the end of May to not take any special orders for the month of June, so that I could focus on school and the Farmers Markets. I really didn’t like doing it, but knew it was necessary. In any way, I love feeling a sense of similarity and connection with you all. Even though we are all on different career paths, we are still able to relate in more ways than we could imagine.

    Great interview to you both!

    Kindly,

    Rachael Petty

      Rachael,
Thank you for stopping by! Coral is very clearly a model for many in these courses, as she is living the entrepreneurial dream, so to speak. That said, she also serves as a foundational servant leader for her employees, which is something that often gets overlooked in entrepreneurship. We are often associated as the “idea” people, but the leadership aspect of founding a venture gets lost in translation. I found that to be one of the more insightful takeaways from my time with Coral, who obviously flexes her leadership muscles to help drive her entrepreneurial success! Thanks again for dropping by!

      Cheers,
      Zane Breeding
